The Sacral Chakra, or Svadhisthana in Sanskrit, is the second energy centre in the chakra system – above the Root Chakra. The word Svadhisthana stems from two words: Sva, meaning “self” or “own,” and Adhisthana meaning “abode” or “seat.” So, the Sacral Chakra is the abode or dwelling place of the self – our home. It is the home of our personal identity and the exploration of the essence of who we truly are. This is where our own unique identity begins to take form, distinct from the primal, foundational instincts of the Root Chakra.
Located just below our navel in the lower abdomen, Svadhisthana reigns over our reproductive system, our personal expansion, our search for balance and vitality, our exploration of sexuality, giving birth to new life, giving birth to our feelings, our desires, our creativity and our overall joy in life. This is the energy centre for the circulation of vital force or prana ‘vyana,’ that invites us to embrace all our emotions, let go of what we are not and open ourselves up to change and transformation.
The Sacral Chakra also influences our bladder and kidneys, our lower back, hips, pelvis, and all our bodily fluid functions. It is associated with the colour orange and the element of water – symbolizing fluidity, flexibility, and flow. Understanding and balancing the Sacral Chakra is essential for developing a healthy relationship with our emotions and creativity that are key aspects for self-love and emotional well-being.
With this blog post, we’ll look at the importance of the Sacral Chakra in our lives, how we can understand whether it’s balanced or unbalanced, and look at some practical ways that we can work with it.
“Creativity is the way I share my soul with the world.” — Brene Brown
The Role of the Sacral Chakra in Our Lives
With the first chakra – the Root Chakra – we grounded ourselves, we set up base, built our foundations, and we created our container. With the second chakra – the Sacral Chakra – we set up home, now we have the dwelling place of the self. We have moved from solid earth to formless water.
The Sacral Chakra plays an important role in our emotional well-being, our creativity. and how we relate to our own feelings and those of others. It governs our ability to feel pleasure, desire, and joy and our capacity to feel our emotions and experience intimacy. This chakra encourages us to explore our personal desires and passions, enabling us to connect deeply with our true selves.
When the Sacral Chakra is balanced, we are in tune with our emotions and capable of expressing them in a healthy, constructive and loving manner. We can embrace our desires and creativity without guilt or shame, recognizing them as essential aspects of our being. This openness generates within us a sense of self-love, self-worth and self-confidence, allowing us to engage in fulfilling relationships and activities that align us with our true self.
This chakra vibrates at the frequency of 417hz. This frequency is known for its transformative and healing properties that can help us to release past trauma, negative energy and old patterns that are obstructing our creative expression and emotional well-being. Tuning into this frequency, we can experience a cleansing and revitalisation of our emotional and creative energies, clearing the way for our personal growth and opening us up to new beginnings.
The Element of Water and Its Symbolism
The Sacral Chakra is associated with the element of water, emphasizing its connection to fluidity, adaptability, and change. Water symbolizes the flow of emotions and the ability to adapt to life’s circumstances. Just as water can be gentle or powerful, this chakra embraces a wide range of emotional experiences – from calm serenity to intense passion.
Water’s fluid nature also expresses the importance of maintaining a dynamic balance in this chakra. Emotions, just like water, need to flow freely. When our emotions are suppressed or blocked, they can stagnate, making us feel unsettled, unstable, volatile or numb. Yet when we allow our emotions to flow naturally, they cleanse and refresh our inner world – our dwelling place – leading us to greater emotional clarity and well-being.
